In a dreamlike sequence Alan recalls Alice saying she is leaving him, she doesn't recognize him any more (he is Scratch more and more). The sheriff saying he doesn't look like a man who would kill his wife, but was able to deck Hartman so easily. Recall the various clues pointing to this. Notice the banister is significantly damaged and broken outward. In his rage he pushes her off of the porch into the water. He succumbs to his rage, goes into darkness, and Alice wonders where lucid Alan went.

In the end Alan realizes this fact and accepts you cannot have only light there must be balance.Īlan kills his wife. He has exhausted himself trying to "stay awake," weakened his resilience, and paradoxically made himself more vulnerable to the darkness by fighting it constantly. This coincides with Alan's inability to control his plunges into darkness. The body will force itself sleep in an attempt to survive, without any conscious control. It's interesting that no sleep will induce psychosis and eventually be fatal. Wake and sleep are again metaphors for light and dark, lucidity and psychosis. Notice Alan constantly struggles to "stay awake" with coffee. "Alan, wake up" is Alice's attempt to snap Alan out of the darkness, his psychosis, to bring him into the light, to prevent Alan from becoming Scratch and doing bad things. She isn't wondering where Alan physically went, she is asking where he went mentally. Remember in the beginning, Alan becomes furious, darkness consumes Alan, Alice asks Alan where he went. "Your friends will meet him when you're gone," gone in the mental sense, psycho Scratch replaces lucid Alan.
HOUNDS OF LOVE SPOILER CODE
"Nightmares" is code for Alan slipping into psychosis and becoming raging Scratch. They want to kill light Alan, to completely consume him with darkness/rage/psychosis. In darkness, Alan must consciously battle his inner demons, psychosis, substance abuse, rage, manifested as enemies in the game. In order to combat this, you shine light to get rid of the darkness. The darkness makes people murderously aggressive.

Scratch smiles when the darkness consumes people. The darkness is a metaphor for Alan's psychosis/rage/substance abuse. My (likely unpopular) interpretation is pretty much in line with Tremozi's: Cynthia Weaver is only seen within the "novel's" world, so she can be written off as a potentially fictional character.
HOUNDS OF LOVE SPOILER TV
The additional specials further reinforce this.Īppended: it goes without saying the darkness is a metaphor for his insanity and the light a metaphor for his sanity, the game is a constant struggle as he tries to return to being sane (Zane.) And once again, see Shutter Island :)Ī reasonable theory, but it's way too easy to explain anything that doesn't fall in line with the theory as a dream/illusion/episode, it also really has no anwser if you move beyond the scope of the game itself like American Nightmare, the Alan Wake files or even the Bright Falls mini series.Įven in the game it would have some interesting omissions, like why Cynthia Weaver wouldn't recognize Alan if he is actually Tom or the 40 year or so time gap and that's just out of the top of my head.Īll in all something supernatural seems to be more logic to me, although you do raise some cool points that really are easily overlooked and make the story of the game even more awesome.Īlan Wake's American Nightmare is just a TV show playing while Barry is sleeping in a Hotel (as seen in first few seconds of launching the game), written by Thomas Zane's alias Alan Wake. The character Alan Wake is a schizoprehnic alter-ego in a story by Zane trying to come to terms with his wife's death and his own insanity.

Essentially the plot really is Shutter Island.) When you return to the typewriter, as per Hartman's suggestion as therapy, the nightmare begins again. Zane (the rest of the staff and Hartman refer to you as Alan Wake since it is part of the therapy. Wake yep) in his resort is true, and the old fellows even refer to you both as Tom and Mr. Originally posted by Tremozl:Thomas Zane - (btw his name is a message to the audience, "Tom Is Sane") - is a writer and poet whose wife dies (possibly he killed her) the event of which caused him to have a schizophrenic episode.
